Dilemma, indecision, uncertainty, division…at one point or another, these are our day to day experiences.
“Where are you getting at?” You might be asking.Wait a minute… Have you ever been faced with a ‘life or death’ decision situation?(Did I just rhyme? Hahaha!)…On a serious note…Have you experienced a situation where one thing has to ‘give’ for another to work out?…At a crossroads? Well,I have been in so many of such situations.
Look at these two scenarios:
Scenario 1:You get caught for overspeeding and that calls for a hefty fine or a jail term. You cannot take it and therefore decide to bribe the traffic police officer and he or she lets you off the hook.
Scenario 2:The same situation but you decide to pay the price of your breaking the law. One thing you do not see or envision yourself doing is compromise. You therefore, face the law.
From the above scenarios what do you notice? First and foremost, both involve decision-making and the testing of your principles. The one that really stands out is the ‘giving’ of one for the other.
“…how then can I do such a wicked thing and sin against my God?” Joseph told Potiphars’ wife and with all her persistence day after day,Joseph did not change his mind. His standard was God.
Between a rock and the deep blue sea,we fail to focus on Jesus,we bend and break. We fail to ask ourselves the ultimate question,What Would Jesus Do?(WWJD) Remember, He lived a sinless life and this is why He should be our measuring rod.
“How will my friends think of me?…Wednesday evening,’ladies night’ you are there with your friends partying all night, yet you claim to be a Christian. ” I wish I had a choice…” Well, you do have a choice.Proclaim your stand to your friends, they might not take it lightly but it is for a worthy cause,a cause most fulfilling than compromising to please. In any case, you cannot please everyone. Why not stand your ground and maintain your dignity than trade it for cheap?Which is better? Not living or living to die?
Matthew 10:22 Jesus speaking to his disciples said,
“All men will hate you because of me,but he who stands firm to the end will be saved”
Christianity is an uphill climb my friends!
I came across a very interesting quote by Dwight.D.Eisenhower that states,
“A people that values its priviledges above its principles, soon loses both”
If you value your freedom at the expense of your dignity, you will soon lose both your freedom and dignity. What a price to pay!
Jesus Christ, our greatest example stood His ground in the face of adversity. He stared at death but did not budge. He upheld His integrity, kept His dignity and to date we celebrate and applaud His Divinity.Where would we be if He succumbed to the pressure? What meaning would there be to life and living?
You do not want to be a 50/50 Christian, neither here nor there, serving God and at the same time conforming to the standards of the world. See what John writes to the Laodicean church:
“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So,because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold,I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”Revelation 3:15-16
There is no two way about this. You are either a Christian or not, period!
Jesus speaking in Mark 8:38 says, “… for whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation,of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the Holy angels”
I end by echoing the words of an artist called Jeremy Camp:
“Every time I try to play it safe, holding back just a little part of me,I find myself forgetting what I say that I believe. The promise of Your Word is all I need.I lay my life down and give it up.I will lose my life and just let go,because I know this world is not my home. With fearless faith,I won’t be moved, unshakeable inside Your Truth. You laid your life down and gave it up,so I give it up.I wanna be reckless, cause You are endless,I wanna be shameless and shout Your greatness.I will not be afraid to surrender my way and follow who you are.I won’t waste anymore time,my life’s Yours, not mine.Use me Lord no matter what is at stake”
