Strategic plans and new years resolutions are a very common phenomenon both at individual and organisational level.Question is,do they guarantee success? Please do not get me wrong, am not against them infact, I advocate for such, but first…
Let’s look at these examples:
Nokia, did surprise many, after Microsoft acquired it’s devices and services.Atleast two in three people had a Nokia device.Yahoo web search was it;loaded with so much but charged for services that Google offers for free, and this resulted to a shift that devalued Yahoo’s market price to less than $20 billion(Almost 80% of my friends have Gmail accounts)…Nokia or Yahoo were never run on default…Dell on the other hand was the bigwig back in the day.The ‘who’s who’were the target market, massive sales were being made. Then,in came the smartphone, the tablets, ipads and all and it took a while before Dell adapted to the changes.
All that aside we have plans,we have goals, wishes and dreams as well…some want to get married by 25,others graduate and get a well paying job, others drive their car by 27 and so on… But then again,
Life never follows our plans.I find it very wild and untamed. At times,’rebellious’,very hard to bend and make it fit into my desires, plans, schedules…I find life…BEYOND ME!
Someone somewhere runs this life. This person knew that by this time you will not have graduated two years down the line or have had a boyfriend let alone get married by the age of 25.He already saw you alone and desperate today, He saw Nokia,Yahoo and the rest devalued to a buy out. All these,He knew would happen at the time they did. “Why did this person not warn me or them before hand? This person is wicked!!!” You might be thinking.
Proverbs 27:9 says,”A mans’ heart plans his way,but the Lord directs his steps”
There is a place for planning but God should be the one directing it.A balanced tension right there. Your strategic plans, goals, desires, wishes are not necessarily His.He almost always has a different plan cut out for your life.
The biggest mistake we make is glory on our past successes, huge investments and all, then we fail to look ahead and see an oncoming threat. The uncertain and unforeseen future…
Question: Can you see what the future holds?…Personally, I cannot and speculation and a feeling of control won’t do us any good. We are human and limited.
Paul in Romans 11:33-34 acknowledges the sovereignty of God when he writes,”Oh,the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!How unsearchable are His judgements and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or become His counsellor?…He reemphasizes the same in 1Cor 2:16 when He writes, “For who has known the mind of the Lord that He will instruct Him?…
God is sovereign,He cannot be confined in strategies and plans. He is beyond all that. The earth is His footstool.Imagine that!Silver and gold belong to Him.He knows the number of hair on your head.(Ever tried counting?… LoL!)The greatness of His might and strength is seen through all creation;the stars testify this, the birds sing about this and you and I are His handiwork. Isn’t He great?!
We should therefore, trust in the Lord with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all our ways and as a result He directs our paths. (See Prov 3:5-6)
By trusting Him, we are able to open the pages of our lives in light of His eyes and not our own,we are able to come to a point of surrender, such that, with all those plans in place,we still subscribe to a God who has our best interest at heart…His will. This way we shall be able to view life from the point of surrender…surrender to God and His will for our lives.
Shannon Alder once wrote:
“I am convinced that the jealous, the angry, the bitter and egotistical are the first to race to the top of mountains.A confident person enjoys the journey, the people they meet along the way and sees life not as a competition. They reach the summit last because they know God isn’t at the top waiting for them.He is down below helping His followers understand that the view is glorious wherever you stand”
She brings out an attitude of gratitude at whatever point you find yourself in life, because one thing is certain,God is there with you… He is present every step of the way.He cares, knows and sees what lies ahead.
I pray that we come to a point of surrender,a place of withholding nothing…acknowledging His sovereignty and to always remember that we are not our own, for our own or by our own.
