At the topmost top of the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC)…as one literally goes up a stair case or climbs a ladder…as a plane takes off and soars over 30000 ft above ground…With increased height, the buildings appear insignificant, very tiny and almost unclear. In Geographical terms, ‘the higher you go,the cooler it becomes’
Paul speaking in Galatians 3:3-4 says, “Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?Have you suffered much for nothing?-if it really was for nothing?…
The Galatians quickly forgot how they began and where they began…they even forgot with whom they began with, they were living in carnality!Paul had to help them refocus!
I love watching ‘The Trend’ every Friday whenever I get an opportunity to.Two weeks ago,I switch to NTV and guess who is being interviewed by Larry…a gospel artist I have not seen or heard in a while. As the interview progressed, comments trickling in…I was in a state of shock and disappointment but in the midst of this sorry state, that interview awakened me!The artist has completely lost sight of the Master, success and achievements found their way into the head!…To be honest I couldn’t quite clearly hear what was being said because now there is a ‘twenging’ accent’ …Began in the Spirit and now on human effort as Paul clearly put it.Then I remembered the Jazz mystro,Hugh Masekela, who could not stomach being called ‘a legend’ and yet by all standards,he does qualify to be called so!…
Two days ago,I had a convo with a very close friend of mine and he said,“As long as you forget to look back at where you are coming from, then that is the beginning of your end”
‘Up there’it is extremely easy to forget ‘down here’…in any case it looks so insignificant. It takes both intentionality and God at the centre to peep ‘down here’.Very few CEOs or Managers are accessible, one needs to go through A via C to get to D.Some are completely out of reach!Replying to texts or picking calls becomes so foreign to that person who was once ‘down here’…He or she is crowded by schedules other than people who helped him or her get there, people who will be there when all else fails…I don’t blame them, society dictates.Lol!
I am not perfect actually I am so imperfect and that is why I have accountability partners to pinch me awake whenever they notice ‘a big head’ slowly creeping in.I cannot use my own effort to keep my feet on the ground.I need God and His word to always remind me, “Pride comes before a fall…” (Proverbs 16:18)It is never about me or you,it is forever about Him,the author and finisher of our faith! It is more often than not said that those who express humility regardless, experience inner peace and I totally agree. It is easier to be yourself than try and be someone you are not right?…
Where am I heading with all this?…
Let’s look at Paul once again, speaking in 2 Corinthians 12:5-6,“I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses. Even if I should choose to boast,I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me…for when I am weak, then I am strong”
As long as you talk on and on about how you put in so much effort and achieved so much in so little time you risk making yourself’a god’ and yet,it is only in your ‘weakness’ (humility) that you are strong as Paul writes. Why don’t you let someone else boast about you?…Paul says if he wants to boast he would and would be speaking the truth but he refrains so that none can think highly of him!…Perfect example of humility.
- Keep your feet on the ground
You do not have to ‘walk on air’ because when you fall, then you land with a louder “THUD!” and you might break your bones!…1 Corinthians 10:12 rubber stamps this. Paul writes, “so if you think you are standing firm,be careful that you do not fall!”… Do not make an idol of yourself and your achievements.
We serve a jealous God.You know what jealousy can drive a person to… Can you imagine God is a jealous God?…Ask Herod and King Nebuchadnezzar, they made a fool of God and guess who paid the price?… They did!Herod eaten up by worms,King Nebu ate grass like a cow!…Such should drive one to his or her knees.Gods’ goodness and kindness should always lead us to repentance, not to pride and self-absorption.
Pride, greed and self-absorption have led to a number of vices in our society today like bribery, murder, tribalism, nepotism, adultery and the like…Is it worth-it?
Never forget where you came from.Your family, your friends, your grannies, your siblings and above all your God!…When everything else goes down the drain and no one is in sight, your family and close friends will always lend you that shoulder and God is always there to remind you that He will never leave nor forsake you!…At the end of the day,King Solomon finally realized that everything he gained including all the women he wanted was nothing but vanity.
John Wooden once said,“Talent is God-given.Be humble. Fame is man-given.Be grateful. Conceit is self-given.Be careful.”
God gave you that talent that has made you a ‘household name’,watch out for conceit!
This is a reminder to all the artists, both gospel and secular, designers, fine artists, architects, Doctors,CEOs,Managers, lecturers, cleaners, security guards, judges, lawyers, pastors. This is to the world!
I conclude with words from a leadership blogger whose work I love.He writes,
The truth is,all the money in the world does not make you a better person. It simply means you have more money.Real wealth is achieved by appreciating what you already have in life. After all, money cannot buy everything. It cannot buy a close-knit family, good friends, a clear conscience, work-life balance,a happy home,a second chance in life…”
