There was once a miser who hid his gold in the ground and every single day he would head there, dig up the ground and count his gold piece by piece, until one day a robber saw what he was doing. When the miser went back there, he did not find the gold. A stranger walked towards him after he heard his loud cries. The stranger suggested that he should have put it in his house in order to be able to buy something with it,but the miser admitted that he couldn’t imagine spending any of the gold.
Guess what the stranger did…he threw a large stone into the hole telling the miser to cover it because it was worth just as much as the treasure.
There are individuals in this day and age who can be likened to that miser. All they do is amass wealth, deposit in a bank account, invest and save and calculate their net worth.I am not against these at all but wait…
Jesus speaking in Matthew 6:19-21 says, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is,there, your heart will be also”
Question is:Where is your heart?…that is where your treasure is.The miser’s heart was in his gold and he lacked peace and at the end of it all,he lost everything.
We have heard cases of investments gone wrong,in fact we might have experienced this.Huge amounts have been lost in pyramid schemes, conmen have stripped the wealthy off their wealth, banks have gone into receivership…The list is endless.Allow me to echo the words of Jesus again, “Do not store yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal…” There is absolutely no security on earth.Take all the insurance policies available. They do not guarantee security.Parking a vehicle beside a security guard does not guarantee its security.A life insurance policy is good but does not fill the gap left by the loved one lost.
So,what am I admonishing us to do today and in the days to come?…Three things:
There is nothing as fulfilling as selfless living.
“Use alone gives value”…God Himself GAVE his ONLY begotten son and see the impact to date!…Priceless!
Let us not get to a point where we equate your wealth to a huge stone because it does not add any value to others and society at large.
Use alone gives value
Mark 12:41-44 is another scripture we are looking at today…“… many rich people threw in large amounts, but a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.Calling His disciples to Him,Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out their wealth;but she out of her poverty, put in everything… all she had to live on.”
The widow gave quality not quantity.Mother Teresa once said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving”…It should not be done out of duty but out of a willing heart with the foundation being love.
Whenever we give,we should not ‘blow our own trumpets’.The Bible puts it so clearly… “Do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:3-4).Carol Brink stamps this when she says, “The most truly generous persons are those who give silently without hope of praise/reward”
Live a selfless life my dear friends. There is nothing as fulfilling as lighting another candle.
Just start from where you are at 😉
Have a fantastic week ahead!
