On the 10th of September 2017,after an afternoon class, we were instructed to go witness/share the gospel/evangelise to the people around us. In pairs, we left.I was quite skeptical at that moment because I never did a door to door evangelism before.I decided to just go in any case, there is always a first time for everything.Sometimes when we wait for our feelings to align, they never will. This reminds me of a quote by John Piper that goes,
“Have you ever wondered what it feels like to have a love for the lost?… It is impossible to love ‘the lost’.You cannot feel deeply for an abstraction or a concept. ..Don’t wait for a feeling or love in order to share Christ with a stranger. You already love your Heavenly Father and you know this stranger is created by Him, but separated from Him, so take those first steps in evangelism because you love God. It is not primarily out of compassion for humanity that we share our faith or pray for the lost; It is first of all, love for God.“
Sentimentality is okay but should not be the primary driving force. Our driving force should be our love for God.So…we arrived at a certain man’s place and we started a conversation. He said, he did believe in Jesus and was a very faithful church-goer, but when we asked him whether he was a born-again Christian who confessed Christ as Lord, he said he was not ready yet.Could his answer have prompted me to look around?…Well, maybe…I saw a bottle of vodka on his table. Here we are asking him to consider salvation and there it is,a bottle of vodka yelling his name!…You can imagine the confusion. We left the place but asked him to think through it.He was so receptive.I was impressed.
The whole scenario attracted a train of thoughts…This guy could have been in a very depressing season, frustrated and in need of a ‘love assurance’.On the other hand,he could have been enjoying his weekend, wiling away time with a bottle of Vodka and a captivating series. Either way, the love of God was brought at his door step. That is all that matters. My prayer is that he finally decides.
“God can do everything by Himself, but if He chooses you, it is a privilege.” Lynn
He can save everyone in a split of a second, but He chooses us to do it.One of my favourite verses,Matthew 28:18-20 New King James Version(NKJV) “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
As followers of Jesus, we have a ‘job-description’clearly outlined in the above scripture.See what Paul says in 1Corinthians 3:9(NKJV) , “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.”
We have work to do and in Piper’s words,it is for the love of God.
Allow me to be statistical for a moment here…A missionary was speaking to us sometime back and he said that there are approximately 7.5Billion people in the world, 5Billion are unreached, 2.5Billion are reached, out of which 700Million are Christians.Does this ring a bell?…Jesus in Matthew 9:37 said it, “The harvest truly is plentiful but the labourers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.”
Prayer is inevitable.
Jesus Christ assures us of His presence to the end of the age.Yes, we will face persecution and rejection as we go about this, but He promised His backing, not just once in a while or whenever we need him, but always!Doesn’t this boost our confidence?
A practical example…A child is always confident to confront his/her bully when mom or dad is nearby than when they are far away right?…The same applies to us.We are confident because God is with us.
Is persecution and rejection a foreign concept? No. The twelve apostles of Jesus were not only persecuted but they died preaching the gospel.Let’s look at a few:
- Peter and Paul
Martyred in Rome(66AD).Paul was beheaded and Peter was crucified upside down.
Replaced Judas. He was sent to Syria with Andrew and was burnt to death.
Ministered in Syria. He was stoned then clubbed to death.
Before Paul met his death, he boldly declared, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)
Jesus speaking in Matthew 5:10 says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
The kingdom of heaven is promised to those who reach out and stand their ground in the face of persecution.Amazing! We have modern day ‘Peters’ and ‘Pauls’ who are being jailed daily across the globe, molested, kidnapped and even burnt alive.Underground churches are in the unreached areas, where Christians meet secretly. I mean,it is extremely difficult to preach this gospel but when we rest on the promise that he is with us to the end, then we should be confident enough.
“I am not worthy for use,” you might think.Jesus Christ chose ordinary men; fishermen and taxcollectors. The gospel was revolutionized by a chief prosecutor of the church!(Apostle Paul). He is no respecter of persons.Allow Him in your heart. Encounter His undying love, then reach out to others, starting with your close circle of friends.
Those at the verge of committing suicide, of divorce. That one who believes that no one loves or cares about him or her is waiting for you and I to assure him or her of Christ’s relentless love. They are waiting for you and I, like Tauren Wells, to tell them,
“God’s not done with you, even with your broken heart and your wounds and scars. God’s not done with you when you are feeling lost and it’s hard and your falling apart. It’s not over, it’s only began,so do not hide or run because God is not done with you.”
Listen in to this amazing song by Tauren Wells below…
Reaching out is part of God’s plan.It has only began.
I end with a powerful quote by David Platt,
“Radical obedience to Christ is not easy… It’s not comfort, not health, not wealth and not prosperity in this world. Radical obedience to Christ risks losing all these things. But in the end such risks find its reward in Christ. And He is more than enough for us.”
May God grant us courage to take that first step.
Have an amazing week ahead.
