Am I my brothers’ keeper?…
Cain and Abel,Adam and Eve’s sons had different occupations;one was a farmer the other tended flock.Their offerings were different too;one was accepted the other rejected. Why?One gave the best, the other gave some. Cain did not understand this and his anger and frustration led him to sin…murder. I like what God tells Cain in Verse 7, “If you do what is right will you not be accepted?”…(See Genesis 4:1-16)
The new year 2018 is finally here with us.There will be ups and downs, hills and valleys and above all responsibilities. The question that Cain sarcastically asked God…Am I my brothers’ keeper?…This is a question we all ask at one point or another.
In the workplace,we are faced with so many accountability situations, some so tricky and heavy,we bail out on fellow colleagues. As long as you have secured your job and ‘saved face’then all the others can just go face the music.Infact at that point in time you don’t even want to associate with them. They become complete strangers. In any case,Am I my brothers keeper?
You can literally see your friend taking the wrong road. “It’s non of my business,” so you think.
So many have been involved in dubious ways together, others have led their friends or family astray…in fact at that point in time things seem to work out so well to a point where that Grenade you will catch it for him or her.Wait until the rubber meets the road…You become a ‘Peter‘ who denied Jesus at the time He needed Him most,a ‘Judas‘ spilling it all out for your own selfish gain…It is so sad that we live in a world where we cannot trust anyone not even ourselves😑…
Paul speaking in Romans 14:15-16 says, “If your brother/sister is distressed because of what you eat,you are no longer acting in love.Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. Therefore,do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil”
In Kenya for instance, there was the nyumba kumi(ten houses) initiative, launched to enhance community for lack of a better word. One had to at least get to know his or her neighbours 10houses away from where he or she stays. From where I stand I highly doubt it worked coz I found it hard myself😱
Where am I going with all this?…This new year let us purpose to be out brothers’ keeper.Be there to stand by them, for them and with them.Correct them where correction is needed.Embrace them when loneliness strikes.Life is about people. You and I can never take the world alone.
As long as you and I do the right thing at whatever capacity then acceptance results. In the scriptures quoted above,Romans 14:15-16 and Genesis 4:1-16,we all have the responsibility to be our brothers’ keeper.God expects this from us.
My prayer is that through this year,we shall intentionally replace the question,Am I my brothers’ keeper?…with the confident and bold declaration of I am my brother’s keeper. The world then becomes a better place.
Have an awesome week ahead!
Everybody needs someone beside them shining like a lighthouse from the sea.
