STRANGELY DIM

The lessons life presents to us each day are precious and building upon each breeds lasting knowledge and wisdom.Picking the lessons every single day helps us build a more solid foundation of knowledge and wisdom the next day,the next week and the next year.I have come to learn that each day,as new as it is,builds on the previous in terms of the lessons learnt. We only get to do the same things over and over again expecting different results when we don’t pay attention to the golden lessons of life exposed in very simple interactions or observations.

Money…A powerful tool that improves peoples’ lives as well as holds them captive on the other hand, has blinded many and opened the eyes of many as well.Money or should we call it ‘valuable paper’ has trashed peoples’ values, broken families, destroyed lives and corrupted individuals. It is money that makes so many people around the world to sell their souls for more gain.It is this same money that has led little girls and boys astray…plunged so many into deep, dark dungeons of no return.Money makes and breaks.

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? Mark 8:36

There is more to life than an abundance of possessions.Luke 12:15, “And He said to them, ‘Take care and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ones life does not consist in the abundance of His possessions.”…Internalize this for a moment…My life does not consist in the abundance of what I possess…Your life does not consist in the abundance you possess. So what does it consist of?…

Money in itself is not bad what is bad is the love.1 Timothy 6:10 says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.Mallice, pride, adultery, fornication, lust, corruption, murder, witchcraft are some of the vices the love of money breeds. There are those who barely sleep as a result of the worry for their money or the next big deal to close…If only we had the same passion we have to make more money,to spend time with the giver of that same money(God),it would be incredibly awesome because that way we guard our souls, hearts and minds and we find unspeakable joy even as we go about our business. The Love of money drew Judas Iscariot to the ‘noose.’He hang himself after realising his betrayal against ‘innocent blood’ and guess what the chief priests did, they took the pieces of land and went and bought the potters’ field where they could bury strangers.I guess Judas was one of the strangers buried there!(Who was Judas to them anyway?!…Madharau tupu!(Utter Scorn!) See Matthew 27:3-10.

Where am I going with all this?…The season I am in at the moment has taught me how losely we should hold our money/wealth because there are certain things in this life that money cannot buy at all.You can buy your position at work but you cannot buy your dignity…You can buy all the women in the world or all the men in the world but you cannot buy a lasting marriage…You can buy your way out of a ‘tricky’ situation but you cannot buy the freedom of your conscience…You can buy commodities that fulfill you but you cannot buy lasting happiness…You can visit the most expensive and renown doctors but you cannot buy health and wholeness…Can you buy friendship?Nah ah!…You see …Wealth/money can only go as far.If only we get to realise the fact that ‘the things on earth will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace’ then we awaken to the fact that life is bigger than what we possess or own…The extent to which people go for wealth is just unbelievably insane!…

Money/wealth is a thorn in the flesh.

I would have written about many other things but I use money to symbolise the ‘thorns in the flesh’ we struggle with. Each one of us,including myself has a thorn in the flesh…it could be greed,lust,fear,anxiety,depression,loneliness,worry,self-esteem issues, health issues and the list is endless. We try to rid off this thorn to no avail. We try to use our own strength to do this but we can’t because there is consistent battle between the flesh and the spirit. The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak(See Matthew 26:41 and Romans 7:15-20).The good news is,we have a Saviour who actually knows how painful and humiliating a thorn can be.He wore a crown of thorns…twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”(Matthew 27;29).The one who had power over nature, calmed the storm, healed the sick, drove out demons was humiliated to this extent and yet he did not say a single word!

He was despised and rejected by men, acquainted with grief…pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace and with his wounds we are healed…He did and went through all this for us to be reconciled with Him!What manner of Love is this!…The Saviour Jesus Christ came down in human form to help us get rid of that thorn in the flesh. He came to reconcile us.During this Easter season let us marvel at the powerful work at the cross where our sin and shame was born by a man so innocent yet whose love for us drew Him to extreme suffering, humiliation and loneliness.

Let the Easter season bring us to a place of reflection.Present your ‘thorns’ to God.Let Him shower you with his love.Let Christs’ resurrection power be so evident in your life.

Watch this beautiful song by Kari Jobe called Oh The Power.May it minister to you like it does to me!

Oh The Power of The Cross!

Back to the question asked earlier…What does life really consist of?…

  1. This life is not our own we were bought with a price and we should therefore glorify God with our body.(1 Corinthians 15:20)
  2. Like Paul let us consider our lives worth nothing to us(Acts 20:24)
  3. Our focus should be eternity

I end this write-up today with three wonderful quotes from Charles Spurgeon,John Piper and C.S Lewis that will help us reflect.

  • “No scene in sacred history ever gladdens the soul like the scene on calvary.Nowhere does the soul find such consolation as on that very spot where misery reigned, where woe triumphed, where agony reached it’s climax” Charles Spurgeon

  • Death and resurrection are what the story is about and had we but eyes to see it,this has been hinted on every page ,met us,in some disguise,at every turn and even been muttered in conversations between such minor characters(if they are minor) as the vegetables.” C.S Lewis

  • “Christ did not die to make good works merely possible or produce a half-hearted pursuit. He died to produce in us a passion for good deeds.Christian purity is not mere avoidance of evil but pursuit of good.” John Piper
