“In the human heart there is a built-in obsolescence factor. It does not matter how powerful and influential you are, how much education you have, how self-controlled or holy you consider yourself,your heart, if you do not guard it, will break down.” K.P. Yohannan
We are born inherently sinful and the human heart is the base for all evil…The heart is deceitful above all things,and desperately sick;who can understand it?(Jeremiah 17:9)…If you do not guard your heart,no matter how influential,educated,wealthy,established…it definitely will break down.Literally speaking…The human heart is our lifeline because it pumps blood to the rest of the body and other than that, it purifies the blood as well.As long as the heart malfunctions then trouble looms and ones’ life is at risk.
What do we allow into our hearts?…
Grudges,bitterness,envy,revenge,hatred or love,forgiveness,peace,self-control…What is contaminating or purifying the blood running through your veins?…
There is nothing as energy draining as a heavy heart.You try to smile but people easily notice how plastic and vague the smile is…you yourself sense the plasticity for lack of a better word,you drag yourself through activities you did with so much vigour,you wonder where there seems to be endless sleep and waking up becomes a bore…
Yohannan says regardless,unless you guard your heart it will eventually break down. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all vigilance,for from it flow the springs of life.” I love this version…with all vigilance keep your heart,no room for sleep/slumber stay vigilant and keep your heart.Why? From it flows the springs of life.What will our lives look like when we do not keep our heart?…Contamination results.
Now that we are fully aware that we should keep/guard our hearts,how do we go about this?…Lets’ keep reading Proverbs from Proverbs 4:23 onwards…It says,
Put away from you crooked speech,
and put devious talk far from you.
Let your eyes look directly forward,
and your gaze be straight before you.
Ponder the path of your feet;
then all your ways will be sure.
Do not swerve to the right or to the left;
turn your foot away from evil.
Three things stand out :
- Crooked speech and devious talk,put away from you…Carefully choose your words,let them glorify The Father.As angry and as frustrated as you might be,let your lips not utter any devious or crooked words.David noticed his insufficiency in this area and boldly approached God asking him to let the words of his mouth and meditation of his heart be acceptable in Gods’ sight (Psalms 19:14).We can ask God too,it is not a crime,He says come boldly into the throne of Grace…Go to him ask him to help you put away crooked,devious,perverse speech.
- Let your eyes look directly forward and your gaze straight before you. “…as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)…Distractions are so many…purpose to fix your eyes on Jesus,fix your eyes on the eternal…the unseen.God help us.
- Ponder the path of your feet. These two feet have taken many down to their graves,these two feet have birthed destinies…these…two…feet…Think about where you are going my dear friends.As a Christian should you be found in a club?…Oh ya right you are taking water or a soda while your friends are drinking but when a fellow Christian sees you coming from a witchdoctor/pub/club…where is your testimony?…Where is Christ seen through the eyes of your fellow Christian?…In the words of King Solomon who experienced the consequences of not pondering the path of his feet,turn your foot from evil,do not swerve to the right or the left. Let Gods’ Word be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.(Psalms 119:105)
Unless you guard your heart it will eventually break down.
Our hearts are like storage tanks.Fill it with contaminated water that is exactly what you get out.Fill it with clean,fresh water,that is exactly what you get.Watch out for what you see and hear…With all vigilance guard your heart for out of it are the springs of life. Remember the old adage, “Gabbage in,gabbage out.”
Is there hope for us?Oh yes there is always hope for one who watches his tongue,ponders the path of his feet and ultimately fixes his eyes on Jesus.There is hope!
Allow the Lord to search your heart and test your mind.Be vulnerable before Him,there is absolutely nothing you can hide from Him.He knows you inside out and He is the only one…the ONLY one who can search your heart and test your mind.
I end with the words of Hebrews 12:1,2…
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Look to Jesus.Let Him strip every distraction away until He is the only one who remains in your life.He is well able.
People never crumble in a day…It is always a slow fade…Always remember…
Have a fantastic week ahead!
