What would you do with an open cheque handed over to you by the President?
Its a question we were asked in church.I tell you I had so many ideas in my head, but here is the twist…
Coming from the President, you don’t want to look too greedy or too reserved. As much as you would want to draw as much money as you can for a lifetime, that would paint a desperate and greedy individual, maybe the President might have second thoughts about handing that open cheque to you.On the other hand, you might be too careful or too reserved out of fear…I mean there is just too much to consider!
Think about a Father, with him,you can go to him for whatever, whenever and however you want it without fear.Maybe your Father wasn’t that kind of person or maybe, you never had the privilege of growing up with a Father. It doesn’t matter! What?…Yes,it just doesn’t matter!Believe it or not you and I have a Father who handed over an open cheque decades ago!
Let’s see how that comes about…In Luke 11 from verse 5-8,Jesus tells a parable…
“Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, because a friend of mine has come to me and I have nothing to set before him.’ Then the one inside answers, Don’t bother me.The door is already locked and my children are with me in bed.I can’t get up and give you anything.” I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness,he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
At midnight, the man goes to ask for bread from his friend. As much as there was no intention of the one inside to get up and give the loaves,he just had to because of the audacity the friend had to trust that the loaves he needed he would get regardless of time.Midnight is quite an odd hour don’t you think?I mean it is one thing to take the bold step and its absolutely a different ball game to trust that what you need you will get.
“Prayer opens a world of impossible possibilities.”
Life can be so overwhelming. At times it even becomes a blur, waking up in the morning becomes an uphill task, reality would rather be ignored than absorbed, but guess what…we have a Father.
A Father ready to hand out ‘the three loaves of bread’ at whatever time of day.We have a Father who says, “Ask and it will be given to you;seek and you will find;knock and the door will be opened to you.For everyone who asks receives;he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Luke 11:9,10)
He has allowed us to ask, knock on that door and above all seek Him out till we find Him.Isn’t this beautiful?…He is a God who is a good good Father. He cannot give us a snake when we ask for fish or a scorpion when we ask for an egg.And whenever we feel like we don’t deserve to ask…remember,He has offered us an open cheque …
“…and I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name and I will do it.”
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you,ask whatever you wish and it will be given you.”
“You did not choose me but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”
In quick Succession, our Father hands us an open cheque, but with this comes conditions… As taught, here are the conditions attached to the open cheque:
- Align with the will of God.Is whatever you are asking in line with His will?
- Have Faith as you pray. Jesus answered, “Have faith in God.” (Mark 11:22)
- Live in obedience to His commands. “…remain in me and my words in you…” (John 15:7)
- Pray with someone else. Have an accountability partner who can stand by and with you.
- Pray audacious, persistent and shameless prayers.God knows your heart and your thoughts,be as honest as possible, don’t give up and trust that those ‘three loaves’ you will get.
As much as we have this open cheque at hand, let us not be quick to abuse it and see God as an ATM card, rather let us allow ourselves to be soaked in His relentless love for us and build a day to day relationship with Him.
I have a friend who broke off her engagement simply because she had no peace, consulted with God and God did give her the way forward. Now,she is happily married to her friend and cheerleader!God saved her from a man who had a secret life of robbery, that is how far having a relationship with God can take you.He becomes so close to you revealing deep and intimate things too. That’s the kind of Father we have. You are never alone.
He loves you too much to see you hurt.Do you know Him?Allow Him in,give Him a chance by praying this simple prayer with me…
“My Father and Friend.I know am not worthy to call you these but I believe you are from this day henceforth. Blot out my sins and help me remain in you as your words remain in me.I love you God and thank you for calling me your Friend.”
