“I have no one to help me into the pool, when the water is stirred…”
This man is introduced to us in the book of John 5.He has been in this condition for quite a while and Jesus just does not seem to wrap His mind around passing by… “Do you want to get well?”…What a question.Jesus always had His way of digging into ones psychology.I mean, who does not want to get well?…The man responds by justifying his state then he sinks into self pitty not knowing His redeemer is at Hand.I can feel his sense of frustration,I can see his downcast face…BUT…
Lecrae,my favourite all time rapper.Started listening to this guy when I was 12 and that’s how Christian trap/hip hop became my second best genre.Anyway, his grandma gave him a Bible that he often used as His good luck charm whenever he went to steal or do funny stuff. He was as they called him, “a misfit of a person”. Drugs,alcohol,women,gangbanging,thrill-seeking…I mean he did it all!He ripped the pages off the Bible because he felt it wasn’t real or true. With an increased sense of emptiness came smoking and drinking. At 17,he reached a dead end.His personal, social and financial life crumbled.Through this, his grandma influenced him to go to church and he then joined a Bible study through his highschool friend. At 19,he decided to live for God.
The point here is,Lecrae had people around him who ‘stirred the water’.His grandma,His mother, the circumstances around him and His highschool friend. The Bible was the catalyst.Look at Him now!Impacting generations with His music and lifestyle all for Gods’ glory!…
Back to our main character today, the man beside the pool of Bethesda. Jesus I believe saw and felt His desperate state and instead of calling someone to go ‘stir the water’ then carry the man to the pool,he said to the man, “Get up!Pick up your mat and walk.” The man picked His mat and walked. Jesus was the stirred water in person! He was that pool itself!…The man did not see this coming, all he knew to do was to justify His situation…BUT Jesus!
Three types of people surround us at every point in time:
- The Blind-These are spiritually blind people but physically have a vision 20-20.They are carnal.Like Lecrae who tore the Bible pages out because he could not imagine it being true/real.
- The Lame-These are people who know Christ exists, they are well aware but need discipling to get to a point of spiritual maturity.
- The paralysed-They have no idea about Christianity or Christ. They literally need leading, feeding and excess pastoral care to get to spiritual maturity.
The above categories have one thing in common. They all need you and I to ‘stir the water and dip in the pool’…They need us to GO!Romans 10:14-15 says,
How,then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
I have used John 5 to inspire us to action. It is a call to touch and impact lives, stir hearts(stir the water). The pool in this context represents the Good news.We have an obligation to reach out to ‘the blind’, ‘the lame’ and ‘the paralysed.’ Like Jesus, our perfect example do not pass these people by.
I end with a quote from Soicho Henda who stated,
“The value of life can be measured by how many times your soul has been deeply stirred.”
“My prayer is that you be burdened to have beautiful feet.” Lecrae.
