“With a spring in his step and an eye to the sky, at sunrise, he makes straight for the sheep fold. As soon as he rattles the gate, he gives his morning call, greets the sheep, often by name, every sheep is on its feet. They spring toward the gate, with expectancy written on their faces and in their eyes, another great day on the range with their loving shepherd leading the way to fresh grass and cool water.
How they eagerly bound through the gate, one after another, the younger lambs and yearlings with a skip and a bound of sheer joy, pleasure, and playfulness, the older sheep in a more sedate and dignified manner, as if reserving their energy for the demands of the long day ahead.
The sun peeps over the hilltop horizon to make jewels of the dew on the bushes, the ground grass and tussocks. The air is clear, brisk, and bright. The wind has not yet arrived and there is a sense of peace all around. As the flock strings out, all is joy, abounding life, and togetherness.
The sheep follow after as the shepherd leads them along a different course in a new direction to feed on a fresh range that has not been grazed for months. The leaders are at first unsettled and seem to want to return to the old paths and the well-trodden ways, but they reluctantly follow the lead of their shepherd as he directs them to fresh, clean pastures and sweet grazing.” Ervin Kimrey Excerpt
Imagine for a moment,a herd of cattle or a flock of sheep without a shepherd…It is extremely unlikely that there will be sanity or silence in that situation. Most will return to old paths as the writer stated in the last paragraph above.
Shepherds…very simple, yet very key.Think about David.Lost in the profession, when Samuel was busy looking for another King to replace King Saul(refer to last weeks’ post) but found by God and at the end of the day He became the King of Israel!Anyway, let me not get carried away yet… 😀
This Shepherd, wakes up very early in the morning.See the picture painted above by Ervin Kimrey. The Shepherd:
- Greets the sheep by name
- Births expectancy in the sheep
- Leads the way to freshness
- Leads to a new direction
Do you see why sheep feel and appear lost whenever they lose track of the shepherd?…Closer home a lost child cannot but cry helplessly while he/she wanders desperately looking for his/her parents…Your point exactly?…You might ask.Well…I am not advising any of you to become sheep because of course you cannot be one…haha…now that my write-up is full of shepherdy-sheep stuff… 😀
My point is found in two scriptures:Psalms 1 and Psalms 23.It is so true that scripture does explain scripture.Let me show you how this two intertwine.Psalms 1 talks about the blessed versus the wicked man.The man who is blessed does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in sinners’ way or sit in the company of mockers.Day and night he or she delights in the law of God and does not only delight but also meditates on it.He subscribes to the leading of the shepherd.
Lets flip over to Psalms 23,talking about the Lord our Shepherd…It reads:
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
As long as we follow the Lord, who is our Shepherd,we are:
- Made(Verse 2)
- Led(Verse 2b)
- Refreshed(Verse 3)
- Guided(He is the Shepherd,He guides…(Verse 3b)
Believe it or not, with the above in our lives, what else do we need?…
how about you ask the sheep that are being led by that shepherd over there….look!…hahaha!…He uses His Rod to defend us,lead us and manage us and His staff,He uses to protect us.How cool is that?!
When we follow the Shepherd,we become that blessed man mentioned in Psalms Chapter 1,whose life is encircled by numerous eternal benefits like:
- Fruitfulness in season-He leads beside quiet waters
- Prosperity in the works of ones hands-His goodness and love follows us for the rest of our lives
- Health and vitality-He refreshes our souls
Whenever we want to return to old paths and well trodden ways,we shall have no choice but to follow Him,because He is the only one who knows that despite the ups and downs that the paths he leads us through are filled with, there is a ‘fresh range of grass that has not been grazed for ages!’ Wow!…Freshness all the way!…
As a child of God,I want to let you know that you have a shepherd. He is there leading you willingly…Please do follow Him?…Remember when you do,you are made, led, refreshed and of course guided every single step of the way!…Halleluyah!…I always look at Shepherds and wonder why they almost always are not in close proximity to the sheep/cows/goats…they are almost always a step or two behind…This is because God is generous enough to give us free will to choose, when we go astray then the rod is put to use to get us back on course.
For those of us who are wondering who and what this Shepherd is about…Allow me to introduce you to the King of all Kings, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the one who conquered Death,Hell and the Grave,The Saviour of the World!…(Drumrolls…)…JESUS CHRIST!Please pray this simple prayer with me?…
“Shepherd of my soul,I accept you into my life today.I believe that by your guidance I shall be able to wade through the mucky waters of life and I shall be protected and secured from harm.I ask you to cleanse me of all my sins and clothe me with righteousness.I give you full control from today henceforth and whenever you lead me,grant me grace to follow you.I pray trusting and believing.Amen.”
This is the best choice you have ever made my friends!
Welcome to the family!
Remember to always subscribe to the Shepherd. With Him on the wheel,we are headed the right direction and bumps are a part of it,not forgetting the potholes!
*Hey! ‘Tis the season!…Make sure you head home for Christmas and spread the cheer and love!*
