Hi there! Allow me to indulge your imagination for a bit. Picture a new born baby for a moment. The craving for breast milk is almost endless and whenever he/ she gets to weaning age, much as other foods are introduced, the regard for breast milk is still extremely high! Or picture the day you were preparing to go on a vacation, as you were packing your bags, most often than not, you notice, you have packed everything you need but left out one very important thing. The most practical thing to do is to vet what you have packed already, get rid of what you can do without and replace that space with whatever you forgot. For instance if, you are travelling during a cold season/ during winter and you have packed a number of sweaters or scarfs, you can decide to replace those with a poncho.
I have been reading a book by John Piper called A Hunger for God and there is a statement he made that resonates with what I am writing about today. He wrote, “Our soul is stuffed with small things and there is no room for the great.” Matthew 5:6, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” From the two illustrations I gave above, the newborn cravings for milk have a lifetime effect or impact in the child’s growth! I mean no other food beats the all-round nutrition that breast-milk provides! It even has natural antibiotics! The poncho packed in place of so many sweaters serves the purpose, and makes the travel-bag or suitcase lighter at the end of the day!
If we stuff our souls with everything else the world offers and forget about the great, we miss the point and we put our lives at stake. We are satisfied and fulfilled if we hunger and thirst after righteousness. This is the great! We are satisfied if we ‘seek first His kingdom’ because then, all the other things will be added unto us(Matthew 6:33). The world always promises a ‘filling’ whether physical, sexual, emotional or mental. With this kind of filling, it is very easy to be chained in an addiction because then, there is a feeling of escape when engaging in a certain thing. For instance, clicking on that website and engaging in pornography is fast and you do not need to struggle, or engaging in dubious activities to get money illegally, like smuggling drugs, or swindling clients, or even having a clandestine relationship for that adrenaline rush, your wife or husband does not have to know right?… I mean, the world has it!
“Our soul is stuffed with small things and there is no room for the great.”John Piper
The emptiness though! Much as the world offers or promises a ‘filling’, in contrast, God, promises a ‘hunger.’ The danger of being full is, you feel like you do not need anymore. You feel okay and the world is your ‘pedestal,’ on the other hand, with a hunger, you do not settle for less, you keep pushing until you are filled. No wonder, Christ tells us that when we hunger and thirst after righteousness, we shall be satisfied. This is the great. This is true filling.
1 Corinthians 10:12 says, “So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!” Worldly ways guarantee you that feeling of standing firm, but wait until you fall! The pain my friends is unbearable. I love how the message version puts this same scripture, “Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence.”
Where am I going with all this, I am calling us back from a temporary ‘ego-stroking’ lifestyle to a permanent insured one. Insured for life and you do not have to pay any premiums! I am calling us back to the point where we ‘ hunger and thirst after righteousness’ in what we do, how we approach life, who we interact with and the list is endless. With this approach, in pursuit of our goals and our dreams, we live an eternally satisfied life. Like David, who tasted what the world had to offer, stuffing his soul with small things, leaving no room for the great, or King Solomon who did the same, may we at the end of the day come out boldly and declare to the nations of the earth, ” Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are you who hope in Him…” All you need is an intentional attitude to hunger and thirst after righteousness, for eternal satisfaction.
For real. For real.
Have an amazing week ahead and remember to stuff your soul with the great! Thank you so much for stopping by!
